The Model United
Nations is the latest addition to the SMS
portfolio of activities. An engaging and challenging
club, the Model United Nations brings together
students from all grades in one group. It
provides opportunities to explore the applications
of higher order thinking skills and to investigate
new approaches in applying what they’ve
learned in several subjects. Students mock
the activities of UN delegates in practice
sessions and in monthly conferences, but more
importantly they learn such diverse skills
as speech making, negotiation, compromise,
and position paper writing. Beyond these skills
is the work that goes on under the surface
in history, geography, economics, politics
and worldwide relations that help students
better understand the nations theory will
represent. One of our most successful activities
to date, in its two years of offering as an
activity, the model UN has grown from eight
students to over thirty.
